Empowering Communities with Compassion: The Story of GECT as a Charitable Trust Donation in Kolkata

Between the concrete jungle of Kolkata and the pristine wilderness of the Sundarbans lies an insurmountable gap of privilege and poverty. In these challenging times, GECT has been bridging the gap between the two for 15+ years now. Founded by Dr. Purnendu Roy in 2009, GECT's main focus is to serve the downtrodden and vulnerable sections of society.

Today, GECT stands as a ray of hope for several thousand people. It aims at the holistic development of underprivileged sections of the population via education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods. If you have been looking for a meaningful way to give back, a charitable trust donation in Kolkata through GECT ensures that your contribution directly impacts those who need it most.

Empowering the "Tiger Widows" of the Sundarbans

One of the most commendable efforts made by GECT has been towards empowering the tiger victim families of the Sundarbans. Several families lose their prime earning members to tiger attacks as they go fishing or harvest honey. These widows are left to suffer in utter poverty and social isolation.

At GECT, we currently look after the needs of more than 800 widowed women and 1,000 orphaned children residing in these far-off villages. To empower these women, we do the following:

·       Purchase of Organic Goods: Our organization buys organic honey, crabs, and vegetables directly from them at a reasonable price.

·       Skills Training: Sewing machines and tailoring classes are provided to these women to make them self-reliant.

·       Monthly Distribution of Rations and Medicines: Regular food provisions along with medicines are sent to them.

Educating the Next Generation

In a bid to eradicate poverty, GECT has launched various programs to improve access to education. Several children belonging to these areas are first-generation learners. Without any intervention, their dropout rates are alarmingly high due to financial reasons.

With this in mind, GECT has started its "Education for All" campaign. Under this campaign, we do the following:

·       Distribution of School Kits: School bags are distributed to these children along with school uniforms and stationaries.

·       School Computer Labs: A modern computing system along with qualified teachers is provided in these schools.

·       Conduct of Health Checks: Washrooms are installed in these schools to provide proper hygiene, especially to girl students.

Improvement of Healthcare and Sanitation Facilities

Many parts of rural Bengal lack easy access to healthcare facilities. GECT, in partnership with Genesis Hospitals, runs several free health camps and surgeries for the less fortunate. This includes life-saving vaccines to mothers and awareness regarding different diseases.

In addition to this, GECT has taken many steps to promote good health among communities. From distributing free sanitary napkins to setting up tubewell pumps in villages like Bijoynagar and Mathurakhunda, we have covered all aspects of health and sanitation since 2015. More than 9,600 women have benefited from this service to date.

Why Does Your Contribution Matter?

Though many challenges lie in front of poor communities in Bengal, the impact of concerted efforts to help them will far outweigh the problems. Any effort, whether it is sponsoring animals of old Calcutta or providing mid-day meals to poor children of Sunderbans, counts.

Through GECT’s charitable trust donation in Kolkata, your contributions will not only provide monetary benefits but also a chance to serve society. Whether it is a school book for a child or a sewing machine for a widow, your efforts will create an impact on countless lives.
